OneAdvocate Financial didn't start as a benefits disruptor. We started where the real work happens — in the numbers, in the plans, and in the lives of the employees those plans are supposed to serve. Here's how we got here.
We began in the 401(k) and retirement planning industry — helping employers build programs that actually moved the needle for their people. Not just checking a box at enrollment time, but designing retirement strategies that created real, long-term wealth for employees. Over the years, this work gave us something most benefits firms never develop: a deep understanding of how every financial decision an employer makes ripples through the financial lives of their entire workforce.
After more than a decade in retirement, we saw a pattern that frustrated us: disconnected systems were creating disconnected outcomes. Retirement plans that didn't talk to payroll. Contributions that slipped through the cracks. Compliance headaches caused by vendors who never coordinated with each other. We decided to close that gap ourselves. By bringing payroll in-house, we could ensure that every dollar flowing to an employee's retirement was tracked, timed, and managed under one roof. But we also started to realize something bigger — too many companies in all these industries operated in silos and never worked together.
When we entered the health insurance space, the picture became painfully clear. Health insurance was quietly draining the budgets that should have been funding retirement, protection, and financial wellness. The two biggest workforce expenses — payroll and health insurance — were working against each other instead of together. We now had all three pillars under one roof: retirement, payroll, and health insurance. But even with that, we were still operating inside the same broken structures as everyone else. We were doing our best for our clients, but the traditional group health model was the bottleneck. No matter how well we managed the other pieces, the system itself was the problem — and we were part of it.
When Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements became available in 2020, we recognized immediately what this was: the missing piece we'd been waiting for. Not a better insurance product — a fundamentally different architecture that could break the cycle of rising premiums, shrinking benefits, and forced trade-offs that had trapped employers for decades. For the first time, we had a structural mechanism that could free trapped capital and redirect it toward the things that actually build financial security for employees. ICHRA gave us the ability to stop being part of the problem and finally become the solution the market desperately needed. We were among the first firms in the country to adopt the model, and we've been refining our proprietary implementation approach since day one.
With the ICHRA foundation in place and years of refinement behind us, OneAdvocate launched SHAPE — our proprietary, in-house system that brings every pillar of our expertise together into one unified strategy. SHAPE stands for Solutions for Health, Assets, Protection & Engagement. It's not just a framework — it's the engine that creates personalized financial wellness plans for every employee we serve. SHAPE is what finally put our decades-long vision into reality: a single system that connects health coverage, retirement planning, payroll, and personal financial goals into a coherent strategy that builds real progress for real people. You can only get SHAPE through OneAdvocate, and it's the reason our clients experience outcomes that no traditional benefits approach can deliver.
Today, OneAdvocate Financial brings all three pillars together under one roof, integrated through our proprietary SHAPE system. We're not a brokerage that bolted on a few extra services. We're a firm that spent nearly four decades building the expertise to do something no one else can: turn your entire benefits infrastructure into a financial strategy that works for your company and your people.
Based in Indianapolis and serving employers nationwide, we're proud to be one of the few firms in the country with the depth of knowledge, the operational infrastructure, and the hands-on commitment to deliver this model at the level it deserves.
Traditional group health insurance concentrates risk in small pools, drives premiums up every year, and forces trade-offs that hurt employees — reduced 401(k) matches, higher deductibles, fewer choices.
We replace that system with the Individual Platform model, which prices employees in larger national markets. The result is lower costs, more flexibility, and freed capital that can be intentionally redeployed into retirement, protection, and financial wellness.
Our team brings together expertise in financial planning, benefits architecture, payroll operations, and client advocacy.
